Psychology 1 – Introduction to Psychology Winter Quarter, 2008 Reading Guide for Chapters 14 pp. 528–564 Week 10 This sheet is pretty comprehensive, but you’ll notice some terms missing as you read. I chose not to emphasize these topics however you are still responsible for them. 1. Chapter 14 – Personality a. Psychodynamic theory i. In your own words – We are being pushed and pulled by internal forces which we don’t fully understand. The theory relates our personality to those internal forces. b. Catharsis i. In your own words – A release of built up emotional tension. ii. Example – I talk about not knowing my real Dad occasionally and it makes me cry. Afterwards, I feel relaxed because I released the tension. c. Unconscious i. In your own words – A place where we keep memories, emotions, and thoughts [many of them do not make sense] and these things affect out behavior even though we can’t talk about them. ii. Example – Traumatic experiences, such as my Dad leaving, force related thoughts and emotions into the unconscious. Catharsis comes when these emotions are brought to the conscious. d. Oedipus complex i. In your own words – A boy develops a sexual interest in his mom and thus has competitive aggression towards his father. ii.
