Psychology 1 – Introduction to Psychology Winter Quarter, 2008 Reading Guide for Chapters 8.1-8.2 and 5 pp. 284 – 315, 163 – 199 Week 7 * This sheet is pretty comprehensive, but you’ll notice some terms missing as you read. I chose not to emphasize these topics however you are still responsible for them. 1. Chapter 8 – Cognition a. Mental rotation- The more someone has to rotate an object, the longer it will take to answer whether it is the same or a different object. b. Stroop effect i. In your own words – The tendency to read the word instead of saying the color of the word. ii. Example – blue red green c. Change blindness i. In your own words – Unable to notice changes in parts of a scene because you don’t pay attention to everything you see. ii. Example – The pictures where they ask you to find 10 differences. d. Attentional blink i. In your own words – For a short amount of time after we see something, it is hard for us to focus on something else. ii. Example – Each sentence occurs 90 milliseconds after the other, the task is to identify the blue letter and state whether there was a T in the sentence. In your own words –a familiar and typical example. ii. Example – Vehicle is the prototype for car, bus, truck, etc. f. Spreading activation i. In your own words –thinking about a certain concept will prime [activate] concepts that you have linked to it. ii. Example – When I think of Valentine’s Day I think of red, chocolate, etc. g. Algorithm i. In your own words – a repetitive procedure for solving any problem or testing any hypotheses. ii.
