Weathering produces all the soils, clays, sediments, and dissolved substances. o Hard rocks, main process in the rock cycle o Physical breakdown and chemical alteration at surface o All materials susceptible to weathering, response to environmental change, deterioration of structures o Mechanical-physical forces break rock apart into smaller pieces without changing the composition Ex.) Frost Wedging-effects of expansion and volume change of 9%, H2O gets into cracks and freezes Salt crystal growth-effect of expansion and volume change, expansion from salt crystals (shorelines, roads) Sheeting-creates concentric slabs the break off from large igneous blocks (usually granite) Unloading (reduction of P from erosion) then expansion Creates exfoliation domes, onion like layers Thermal expansion-large temp. changing, heat=expanding, cooling=contraction Lab experiments did not find big effects from thermal activity Evidence in deserts Possibly need chemical weathering first
