•Stress –stressor •event that creates demands, change or pressure –stress response •person’s reactions to the stressor •Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) –Sympathetic branch •alarm system: prepares you for fight or flight –Parasympathetic •recovery system: returns body systems to normal Fear and Anxiety •Fear –response to a serious threat to your well-being •Anxiety –vague sense of being in danger •Anxiety Disorders –severe and long-lasting experiences of anxiety that interfere with daily functioning –most common mental disorder –DSM-IV has 6 types Anxiety Disorders - Some Terms •State vs Trait Anxiety –State anxiety •situational anxiety –Trait anxiety •a general personality characteristic •Freud’s model of anxiety –realistic anxiety –neurotic anxiety –moral anxiety Generalized Anxiety Disorder •GAD –vague, generalized feelings of anxiety most of the time –feelings of significant anxiety and worry about a wide range of life
