EMPLOYMENT ISSUES 2 Introduction New Brand Design In. (NBD) is a subsidiary of Colossal Corporations that are incorporated out of the state of Delaware but operates in Serafini, a small Eastern European country. International companies often have more ambiguous laws that operate under different ethical standards than the United States. This can make certain situations difficult as there are more laws and cultural ethics to take into account. Ethics Ethics impact a variety of fields on a global scale. It involves systemizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior (Major Ethical Perspective, 2020), which according to some Philosophers in today’s society usually breaks it down into three general subject area: metaethics – investigates where our ethics principle come from, and its meaning (answers universal truths, the will of God, etc.,). Normative ethics – takes on the practical task, which is to arrive at a moral standard that regulated right and wrong behavior. Lastly, there is applied ethics. Applied ethics examines concerns, capital punishment, and nuclear war (Fieser, 2009). Additionally, the culture in which we come from can impact our values and ethical decision making. Business ethics and management practices affect human resources, marketing, reach and development, and the overall corporate mission. Local culture impacts the way people view employees, and employer- manager relationship, which could lead to not having a clear social rule or standard to prevent discrimination against people based on race, age, gender, sexual preference, or any handicaps. Terminating Elena and Viktor was wrong but seemed to be a normal occurrence with the subsidiary located in Europe.
EMPLOYMENT ISSUES 3 The country has fabricated reasons not to promote women to prominent positions within the company, to include not authorizing a work permit for Beth, a 42-year-old with 15 years of experience in management. Michael, being denied a permit because of his age of 66, could be justifiable, given the Serafini law that everyone is required to retire at sixty-five. Elena, on-the-other-hand should not have been terminated without cause, or due to retaliation about her salary and benefits which were inadequate in comparison to other board members.
