Lymphatic/Immune System LYMPHATIC SYSTEM Function- to return excess tissue fluid to the blood stream thru veins Consists of transport vessels + lymphoid organs Lymph - watery fluid that starts out as plasma and gets forced out of capillaries down to capillary beds where the leakage helps the exchange of nutrients b/w blood and capillaries and cells o Capillaries reabsorb some fluid but lymphatic sys works to absorb the excess and get it back where it needs to go o Capillaries have holes and plasma leaks out w some proteins which is what we call lymph RBC does not leak out bc it is too big for the holes Holes are needed bc they are exchanging nutrients w outside cells (cells get glucose from blood) Edema- when fluid isn’t collected enough, leads to swelling of muscles Lymph vascular system o Lymph capillaries - smallest vessels of lymphatic sys Closed end tubes Walls - endothelial cells w pores to allow interstitial fluid, proteins, WBC, absorbed fat to enter Fluid that enters lymphatic capillary is known as lymph Merge to form lymph vessels o Lymph vessels - transport lymph away from tissues Collect and filter lymph released from blood vessels Connect to vein o Lymph ducts - collecting ducts Lymph ducts empty lymph into either right or left (thoracic) lymph duct after being filtered thru lymph nodes Interstitial fluid is filtered thru lymph nodes before being drained into left and right subclavian veins to go back to cardiovascular sys Connect to subclavian vein which returns lymph to bloodstream o Lymph capillaries merge to form lymph vessels which merge to form lymph trucks which merge until the lymph enters the right and thoracic lymph ducts o Functions Return excess fluid to blood
Return protein from capillaries Transport fats from digestive tract Dispose debris + cellular waste Lymphoid organs o Lymph nodes found at intervals through lymph vessel system ~600- 700 Each contains lymphocytes + plasma cel ls Checkpoints that monitor and cleanse lymph as it filters thru Ensures that bacteria will not enter blood circulation filter the lymph before it is returned to the blood . o Spleen - filters blood stores of red blood cells + macrophages Produces white blood cells that fight infection/disease Located on left side of body under ribs + above stomach spleen filters blood, much like lymph nodes filter lymph o Appendix- contains lymphoid tissue that can destroy bacteria before it enters intestine wall during absorption o Thymus - secretes hormones Major site of lymphocyte (fights foreign organisms) production Located beneath breast bone o Tonsils + adenoids - body’s first line of defense against foreign invaders== Trap pathogens from food u eat and air u breathe o Small patches of tissue in SI ( peyer’s patches ) Found in mucous membrane Monitory and destroy bacteria in intestines Chyle Lymphatic System Chyle- milky fluid consisting of lymph and emulsified fats o Formed in small intestine during digestion of fatty foods o
