Kyle Garrity Professor Sharyn Nelson EN-101I Journal #5 Due 9/26/07 While reading Richard Rodriguez’s essay I began to think about how my own experience was so different from his. I could relate to Rodriguez only through a few peers of mine who fit the role of a “scholarship boy”. I thought about my own years in school and how I was raised educationally, which was a very different way than Rodriguez was raised. My mother was and still is a twelfth grade English teacher in my school district. She would always be extremely hard on me with education. I was raised a firm believer in a strong education. In elementary and middle schools, I cared about my education and tried my best. I took after my mother because it was the only thing I really knew. Looking back on it, I don’t think I ever really cared for myself about school. I only tried my best because it was what my mom taught me and it was important to her. When high school came I began to think for myself. I’m not quite sure how or why, but I think I just
