How might taking vitamin pills have both positive and negative effects on your body based on your diet? What is your opinion of taking supplements? According to a recent survey conducted by the American Osteopathic Association, approximately 86% of American adults consume vitamins or supplements. The most common ones used include multivitamins, vitamin D, and calcium. Although some of these have many health benefits, others have been proven to cause harmful effects to the body. Vitamins and supplements are necessary and beneficial for many different groups of people. To illustrate, pregnant women are encouraged to consume folic acid on a daily basis to decrease the chances of their children developing any birth defects. Folic acid is a water soluble vitamin that cannot be synthesized in the body. Those who have a deficiency of this could increase their chances of developing conditions, such as anemia. Consuming certain supplements can also be beneficial for those who pursue a vegetarian diet. Since most of our consumption of iron and
