“The sequences allow you to participate in an extended academic project, one in which you take a position, revise it, look at a new example, hear what someone else has to say, revise it again, and see what conclusions you can draw from your subject. These projects take time-they go though stages and revisions as a writer develops a command of his or her material, pushing against habitual ways of thinking…” (B & P pg. 23) Upon first reading this quote at the beginning of the semester, I didn’t really think much of it. After writing the in-class essay that very first day, I thought, how could this class be “pushing against habitual ways of thinking”? I found the topic of the in-class to be fairly basic and easy to comprehend. As the weeks went by, however, the readings became tougher, and the essays became difficult to write. Even so, looking back on my papers, I could see the struggle, but I could also see my ability to read, write, and understand increasing. My writing, reading, and overall role as a student has improved over the course of this class. The initial in-class assignment based from the “Introduction” to Ways of Reading was to show a clear understanding of David Bartholomae’s and Anthony Petrosky’s idea of reading “with and against the grain”. I had a very good understanding of what B & P were trying to say.
