Kyle Garrity Professor Dorothy Howell EN-102-03 Creative Writing due 3/19/08 From my understanding, this writing piece is trying to talk to the reader about the human race’s problem of becoming machine like and losing touch with nature. The author of the piece feels we need to keep a firm distance from the technology and machinery we create so that we do not become one of them. “…we must renew our acquaintance with the sensuous world in which our techniques and technologies are all rooted. Without the oxygenating breath of the forests, without the clutch of gravity and the tumbled magic of river rapids, we have no distance from out technologies, no way of assessing their limitations, no way to keep ourselves from turning into them.” I totally agree with the author’s message and strongly feel that humans do forget

The body’s relationship of nature should never be replaced or corrupted by that of technology. What I really enjoyed about this piece is the author’s use of descriptive words and the way he/she uses creative writing. “This landscape of shadowed voices, these leathered bodies and antlers and tumbling streams – these breathing shapes are our family, the beings with whom we are engaged, with whom we struggle and suffer and celebrate.” This quote I feel is one of the stronger uses of creative, descriptive writing in this piece. The use of flowing, descriptive words to describe nature really helps bring the author’s point across....
