Professor Dorothy Howell EN-102*03 Journal 2 Due 2/4/08 One of my favorite essays I wrote in English 101 was on the Banking Concept by Paulo Freire. This essay was one of my favorites because I had to utilize what I had learned in class on writing with and against the grain. Now I always think and write with and against the grain. Thinking in this way allows me to keep an open mind and develop new knowledge as I write. Because I tend to find reading difficult, I usually end up reading texts more than once. Because of this, I plan ahead by first reading the text with the grain, and then rereading against the grain.

Another method I use along side reading with and against the grain is breaking the text down into very small sections. I find it to be very useful to read and analyze just one paragraph until I fully understand it. That way the following text will make a little bit more sense. Writing with and against the grain while breaking down text allows me to think and process the text’s meaning clearly, and then write an essay full of new knowledge....
