Kyle Garrity Professor Dorothy Howell EN-102-03 Journal 5 due 2/18/08 “So what? Who cares? Why does any of this matter?” (“They Say, I Say”, 88). These are questions that many students find themselves asking as they read essays and various texts for school classes. If an author writes an essay correctly, these questions should never cross the readers mind. If the text has a point, the reader will most likely be interested in what the author has to say. However, in my experience with school assigned texts, this is hardly ever the case. When I first began reading Pratt’s essay “Arts of the Contact Zone,” it didn’t take long before I was asking the questions “so what?” and “who cares?”. Page by page, Pratt continued to impress me with her amazing ability to write a paper about absolutely nothing. “Whenever the subject of literacy comes up, what often pops first into my mind is a conversation I overheard eight years ago between my son Sam and his best friend…” (Pratt, 517).
