Kyle Garrity Professor Jack Millea PL-101 Fall 2007 Essay #1 Due 9/28/07 Was Socrates Buddhist? Scholars have always questioned portrayals of the Greek philosopher Socrates. Even though Socrates was a key contributor to Western philosophy, his portrayals vary from source to source, leaving important details and precise beliefs up to question and in somewhat of a mystery. Although Socrates and the Buddha were hundreds of years apart and facts on Socrates may never be certain, I believe Socrates’ ideas to be Buddhist. “The central idea in Buddhist teaching is the gospel of universal salvation based on the idea of the fundamental oneness of all beings.” (pg. 124 of The Compassionate Buddha ) This statement sums up the main Buddhist practice of wisdom, morality and mental cultivation.
