Joel C Reimann H3330 2/17/11 As the Iron Curtain came down in the early 1990’s, NATO and the EU hada number of things on their plate: the number of formerly communist countries that are developing new governments and whether or not they will join the EU or NATO. Many variables effect the decision of the eastern Baltic States joining the EU and NATO. These variables are the U.S. and Western Europe’s situation in recent years, Eastern Europe and the Baltic States in the recent years, and finally Russia in the recent years. As the former Soviet Union disbanded both the EU and NATO played major roles in the after math, NATO took the responsibility of offering the countries security in the membership of NATO and raised standards for new membership to ensure positive change. The EU had the responsibility to make the former communist states into liberal democracies. Looking back at
