Kyle Garrity QU 101 Professor Dave Herscovici 11/16/07 Rousseau and Community I have been a member of many communities all throughout my life. From my home neighborhood to sports teams to where I am now at Quinnipiac, I have had my share of living and being a part of various communities. The largest community I am currently active in is the Quinnipiac community, however, I think that the community I am closest to is my dorm hallway. Irma East side 2 nd floor is certainly one of the greatest and most intimate communities I have ever known. The way our hallway works is very much like the ideas of Rousseau. Our hallway is a good example of Rousseau’s theory of a social contract. In his book The Social Contract , Jean Jacques Rousseau brings up the ideas of a sovereign, a general will, personal will, the will of all, and man’s state of nature. As a person of the hallway, I am subject to the rules and laws of the school and hallway and contribute to the sovereign; therefore making me what Rousseau would call a citizen. “Those who are associated in [the sovereign] take collectively the name of people , and severally are called citizens , as sharing in the sovereign power, and subjects , as being under the laws of the State” ( The Social Contract ; 152).
