Orange County Public Schools andUCF Burnett Honors College Partnership2nd Grade Elementary LessonsPurpose of the partnership:Orange County Public SchoolsStrategic Plan:Lessons to be implemented:Important Note:Materials needed for yourgrade level:To establish a sense of community, engage learners, and promote citizenship, the OrangeCounty Public Schools Advanced Studies department and the UCF Burnett Honors CollegeHonors Symposium will launch a partnership to enhance the educational experience ofelementary and college students.Vision: To be the top producer of successful students in the nation.Mission: To lead our students to success with the support and involvement of families andthe community.In order to meet this vision and mission, OCPS has several models for college readiness inthe Advanced Studies department and they include AVID, Advanced Placement Courses(AP), Springboard and Destination College.The AVID College Readiness System utilizes curriculum to empower students with academicskills, individual determination, and social adaptability leading to college and careerreadiness. The AVID system works with students in K through 12 with the necessary tools tobe successful in a global society. The AVID program promotes college readiness for 1stthrough 5th grades and works to establish a college-going culture in our elementary schools.College readiness begins with promoting best practices and skills that will prepare studentsfor rigor in elementary school, middle school, high school and either their college or careerpaths.
These skills fall under the categories of writing, inquiry, reading, organization, selfadvocacy and collaboration. Each week, college students will work with elementarystudents to promote these skills.Week 1: Collaboration/Organization: Different PerspectivesWeek 2: Writing: Setting GoalsWeek 3: Collaboration- What Does a Successful Student look like?Week 4: Inquiry: Understanding your Feelings/EmotionsWeek 5: Reading: Tattling vs. Telling All activities focus on college and careers appropriate for each grade level.All copies of lesson plans, articles, pictures and materials will be uploaded to theSymposium Webcourses website. UCF students are responsible for printing materialsfor each week. All efforts have been made to minimize the amount of materials neededto print.Prior to attending your first session, please print all materials for your students. Anythinghighlighted in pink refers to definitions that can be found on the “UCF lesson add on sheet.”Materials that just need to be printed once per class are highlighted in green. Articles to beprinted as a class set (25 copies) are highlighted in yellow.
