Orange County Public Schools and UCF Burnett Honors College Partnership 2nd Grade Elementary Lessons Purpose of the partnership: Orange County Public Schools Strategic Plan: Lessons to be implemented: Important Note: Materials needed for your grade level: To establish a sense of community, engage learners, and promote citizenship, the Orange County Public Schools Advanced Studies department and the UCF Burnett Honors College Honors Symposium will launch a partnership to enhance the educational experience of elementary and college students. Vision: To be the top producer of successful students in the nation. Mission: To lead our students to success with the support and involvement of families and the community. In order to meet this vision and mission, OCPS has several models for college readiness in the Advanced Studies department and they include AVID, Advanced Placement Courses (AP), Springboard and Destination College. The AVID College Readiness System utilizes curriculum to empower students with academic skills, individual determination, and social adaptability leading to college and career readiness. The AVID system works with students in K through 12 with the necessary tools to be successful in a global society. The AVID program promotes college readiness for 1st through 5 th grades and works to establish a college-going culture in our elementary schools. College readiness begins with promoting best practices and skills that will prepare students for rigor in elementary school, middle school, high school and either their college or career paths.
These skills fall under the categories of writing, inquiry, reading, organization, self advocacy and collaboration. Each week, college students will work with elementary students to promote these skills.
