Upasana Sonik Sohrab Ghassemi History 46 Section: Tues 5-6 January 29, 2008 Caliph Descriptions Caliph Abu al-Abbas al-Saffah : it was said that he was quick to spill blood. He gave gold very generously. Also in his reign Muhammad ibn al-Ash’ath in the Maghrib, Salih ibn Ali in Egypt, Khazim ibn Khuzaima and Humaid ibn Qahtaba all followed in Saffah’s footsteps. Caliph Mansur: he was the first to spread conflict between the children of Abbas ibn Abd al- Muttalib and the family of Abu Talib. Mansur was also the first caliph to bring astrologers to his reign and make decisions that have to with the stars. Mansur was also one of the first caliphs to have foreign works translated into Arabic. It was in Mansur’s reign that Muhammad ibn Ishaq published his books on subjects which had never been studied systematically or gathered into a single work. Mansur was also the first caliph to distribute public offices among is freedmen and pages. He advanced them over the Arabs and this practice was followed after his time by the Caliphs. Mansur applied himself to the study of religious and philosophical ideas and acquired a profound knowledge of the different sects as well as of
