Chemistry Kinetics Shelton 2 Abstract The purpose of conducting the chemical kinetics experiment is to study the rate of reactions. Simplified, this is the speed at which a reaction occurs. From this experiment, the reaction order can also be determined. In the lab, a data acquisition system and spectrometer are used to measure the wavelength of maximum absorbance for the reaction of 0.100 M NaOH and 2.5 x 10 -5 M crystal violet for three consecutive runs over a period of 300 seconds. The wavelength that the absorbance values were taken at was 591.00 nm. After three runs, the reported absorbance values were used to create three graphs. One graph for abs. vs. time, ln(abs) vs. time, and another for 1/abs. vs. time. The graph with the highest R 2 being closest to one that determines the reaction order. In this case, the value equaled 0.9996, making the reaction second order.

Knowledge of these reactions allows us to be able to predict similar outcomes and to understand the properties of chemicals used in the reactions. The speed that a reaction takes place is called a reaction rate. Enzymes themselves play a huge role as catalysts that improve reactions (Langley & Deo, 2017).
