The Three Kingdoms: Buddhism 11/02/2008 12:54:00 -Source of heaviest continental influence on peninsula during 3K period -originated in South Asia Some of the key ideas and vocabulary: -central idea: nothing is permanent not even the self, everything is in the state of change permanence is what causes suffering in human being never going to satisfy desires/unfulfilled o cant grasp whatever we want or desire, changes before we can get to  it -life is hardship, life is suffering, we should understand and absorb, then learn to  overcome it we can do, as long as we understand, that everything has a cause o causation o therefore will cease to exist once the effect of causation ceases including this life of suffering - four-fold truth : summation of Buddhism society  (look up in reading) life is suffering suffering has is caused causes are extinguishable there is a method for extinguishing the causes of suffering

- eight-fold path  (method to overcome suffering): establish the right view, thought, speech, action, mindfulness, endevor,  livelihood, meditation/concentration first 7, allows one to achieve a state of detachment once one achieves detachment and disengagement, one can achieve  enlightenment through meditation one can achieve detachment/enlightenment o one can grasp and understand the three seals/truths - three seals/truths : all things are without ego/selfhood all things are impermanent nirvana  is the only peace (disillusion of desire) o psychological awareness - karma : acts carry moral retribution everything I do in this life, determines my next life subtotal of all good and evil deeds effects of this continue without end until in some future existence I achieve Buddhist enlightenment, and gain  release from this world of suffering and gain nirvana -not mechanical pre-destination

-does not invalidate effort -historical Buddha lived in India during  enlightened one teacher of royal blood not an object of worship, but over time became one and at that time became  a religion number of Buddhas worshipped grew larger (pantheon) - Bodhisattva enlightenment being one who refused to accept enlightenment b/c preferred to stay back in world
