February 28, 2013 – synthetic rights Progression between first, second, third generation rights First generation: freedom from oppression etc. right to life Second generation: health, education, housing, social-economic and cultural rights in the 1966 international convention Third generation: collective rights, don’t belong to an individual or protect individual but a collective/common good ie environment. Self-determination of peoples Human rights are universal but ideas and cultures are not universal Danger with establishing international Why is it we need an international system? So that accountability is made possible, system of morality vs system of enforceable system Need a minimum core of human rights Human rights in by nature an international project Need to stream line Synthetic rights not clear Matter of morality and politics, not of rights and as such should be determined by each state Destroys idea of westphalian system Human rights violations in other states
