Craig Nutter BIOL 221 Homework #2 1.A. When there is a wound in the skin the innate immune system responds with an inflammatory response and fever. First action taken is to increase blood flow to the wound through the use of cytokines. Then, adhesion molecules within the capillaries begin to bind to the capillary wall causing phagocytes to stick near the wound and kill bacteria in the area. B. The innate immune system will fight an inhaled infection through two defenses. Lysozymes found in mucus and in phagocytic cells would degrade peptidoglycan of bacteria. There are also mucus membranes with cilia lining the respiratory tract which moves microorganisms and viruses toward areas where they can be destroyed more easily. C. If contaminated food is eaten one major defense is the normal flora. Normal flora competes with pathogens to prevent overgrowth through covering the ‘foreign’ bacteria’s binding sites. Another defense is the high pH of stomach acid, which kills many bacteria; the body also has a litany of phagocytes to destroy bacteria not killed by these
