Microbial Growth and Control of Microbial Growth Factors affecting microbial growth (USLO 4.1) - Temperature - optimum growth temperature is the most favorable temp for growth. Lowest temp that an organism can tolerate is minimum growth temperature. Highest temp tolerated is called maximum growth temperature. - pH- optimum growth pH is the most favorable pH for growth. Lowest pH that an organism can tolerate is minimum growth pH. Highest pH tolerated is called maximum growth pH. - Osmotic pressure- pressure that must be applied to the solution to stop fluid movement. - Oxygen- like above each organism has a optimal oxygen concentration as well as a min and max concentration needed for growth. - Nutrient requirements- page 394 & 395 a lot of important information. Microbial growth patterns (USLO 4.2) - Growth Curve- microorganisms grown in closed culture in which new nutrients are added and most waste is not removed. - Generation time- doubling time, time it takes for population to double through one round of binary fission.
