Individual Project 4 Video games have been around since 1952 when British professor A.S. Douglas created OXO as a part of his doctoral dissertation at the University of Cambridge. The game was known as noughts and crosses or a tic-tac-toe. Since then the video game industry has evolved into a $159.3 billion industry. The analytics firm Newzoo predicts that the market will surpass$200 billion by the end of 2023. Addiction, as defined by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences. People with addiction use substances or engage in behavior that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences. This proposal will consist of the steps that will be taken to understand how video gaming can be considered addictive and what the industry is doing to combat this disease. The purpose of this research is to shed light on an issue that is affecting many families across the world. Addiction, in any form, is life altering and in worse cases, deadly, and if this can save even one life, it is worth pursuing. Another reason is because the American Psychiatric Association does not currently recognize video game addiction as a disorder, but in light of existing evidence, the APA has included video game addiction in the DSM-5 as Internet gaming disorder. This condition warrants more clinical research and experience before it may be considered to be included in the main book as a formal disorder.
