Jenny CusackProfessor Schnog22 April 2013Review of SalemAn underground restaurant surrounded by the beats and rhythms, and hustle and bustle of U Street, Salem provides you with the laid back yet jovial atmosphere as you feast on traditional plates of Ethiopia. But the location faces some skepticism from some in the community who want to preserve the area's historic significance. The area was known as America's "Black Broadway" because of its thriving black-owned jazz clubs, shops and theaters.Enjoy the cheap, delicious, and fresh cuisine served by a friendly staff. With over 200,000 Ethiopians in the District, U Street has become scattered with Ethiopian restaurants. Each with its own ambiance and each with it’s own fans. But my personal favorite has to be Salem. With only five tables in the family-owned restaurant there is really a sense of community with the rest of the customers sharing the same experience in the Salem atmosphere.
