Diffusion Rate of Glucose out of Potato Cores of Different Surface Areas David Petronio BIOL 105, Section 8 Stephan Irwin Abstract. The diffusion rate of glucose was examined by a mechanism involving potato cores and water. According to basic principles of diffusion, samples of the same substance with greater surface area to volume ratio than samples with a lesser ratio will diffuse more rapidly through a cell membrane. To test this theory, three samples of potato core with identical volumes, but different surface areas were placed in three separate water-containing beakers. Measurements were taken by placing samples of each beaker in cuvettes and placing them in the spectrophotometer. The data were used to support the hypothesis that potato cores with a greater surface area to volume ratio will undergo a greater diffusion rate of glucose into the surrounding water. INTRODUCTION This laboratory experiment was designed to explore the rate of diffusion in samples of potato core. Diffusion is the process by which substances move into and out of cells. It is a random movement in which a substance travels from the area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. According to the laboratory manual, the larger the surface area of a sample, the more membrane surface exposed to the surrounding solvent. Other factors also contribute to the rate of diffusion such as temperature, and the size of the molecule that is diffusing. In this experiment, more specifically, the rate of diffusion of glucose out of potato cores was examined.
