Weinstein Jacob Weinstein Mr. Neville History 102-5:30 15 May, 2007 Benjamin Franklin The First Great American “Hide not your talents, they for use were made. What's a sun-dial in the shade?” This is one of the seemingly countless quotes derived from the everyday values of a man who not only spread his words of wisdom, but practiced what he preached. Benjamin Franklin was a man of many faces and talents. His historical role as an established author, scientist, inventor, printer, civic activist, and politician has re-affirmed his status as the “first great American.” In short Benjamin Franklin is arguably the most influential figure in the history of the United States of America. Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17 th , 1707 in Boston Massachusetts. Unlike many other founding fathers, who were reluctant to talk about their childhood, Franklin mentioned a great deal about his boyhood. Most of his recollections can be found in his famous Autobiography which was written in the form of a letter to his son William in 1771 (Fleming 15). In his mid teens, Benjamin Franklin became very interested in his older brothers newspaper The New England Courant. He was vastly interested in the ingenious articles written by the men who wrote pieces for the paper. Franklin was excited to try his own hand among these writers but still being only 16 years of age, he knew that his brother would oppose the printing of any of his ideas in his own newspaper; hence the birth of Benjamin Franklin’s first notable creation, Silence Dogood. Weinstein alias as a disguise in order to get his articles published in his brother’s paper. Franklin talks about his tactics in his Autobiography . “I contrived to disguise my hand, and writing an anonymous paper I put it in at night under the door of the printing house.” Young Franklin created an elaborate history for his character Silence Dogood. In short, Dogood was a widow of a country minister, who in her writings expressed that she was an enemy to arbitrary government with unlimited power (Fleming 24). Franklin would go on to write 16 highly touted articles for his brother’s paper as Silence Dogood. Eventually the secret behind the author was revealed and the embarrassments of Benjamin Franklin’s brother lead him to refuse the acceptance of anymore of young Benjamin’s writings. Benjamin Franklin said farewell to Boston and moved to Philadelphia shortly after (Fleming). It was in Philadelphia where Benjamin Franklin prospered. After a near death
