Philosophy of LeadershipGustavous MillerLER 46430 April 2012Definition of leadership Overall Purpose:Leadership is the ability to inspire a shared vision and motivate others toward a common goalthrough the use of positive relationships and effective communication. This definition varies from the overallpurpose of a leader. A leader can still be a great leader if they fail at the task at hand, but they did notachieve their purpose. The overall purpose of a leader is to effectively accomplish the goal set forth with asecondary importance placed on influencing their subordinates to achieve more than is required of them.
My definition and purpose of a leader run parallel with the core values, skills, approach to inspiring, motivation, and communication that truly make a great leader, as well as the leadership theory thatdominates my style and allows me to achieve leadership goals.Core Values, Principles, and Moral Perspective:A great leader is someone who can reach their followers on a personal level. Empathy is a corevalue that radiates this quality in a person. Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s positionin order to see how your actions affect them. This relates to emotional intelligence in the trait approach.Emotional Intelligence is defined by (Northouse, 2010) “as the ability to effectively manage emotions withinoneself and in relationships with others”. Empathetic leaders understand the feelings of others and whythey are feeling that way. Every person has a different background and experiences that shape how theyview the world around them. By having the emotional intelligence to be empathetic, the leader cancommunicate better because he or she will be able to overcome the barriers of communication brought onby these differences. The leader will also be able to develop better relationships with subordinates becauseof his or her understanding of each person. Everyone is a unique individual and it takes an empatheticleader to be able to unite them all under one common goal.Another core value of leadership is being genuine. A leader will not be able to convince hisfollowers to accomplish a goal unless he or she believes in it as well. A leader must adhere to their valuesand convictions and not lie to his followers. It is hard, if not impossible, to motivate one’s self and others fora cause that means nothing to the leader. It is the passion one draws from personal values and convictionsthat allows a leader to stand up and motivate others to follow, and behavior based on their values thatpromotes success. The increase in demand for authentic leadership shows how the world and Americavalue a leader who is truly genuine in their actions.
The last core value emphasized is the ability to be ethically conscientious of the world including theenvironment, the community, and all of mankind. Great leaders will realize that the choices they make do
