Marshall 1 Elliot Marshall Professor G. Cooper ENGL 102-05 “Greasy Lake” as it Relates to My Life Growing up is part of life. Everyone grows physically, but mental growth is what is important. Though it is usually a slow maturing process, literature often portrays it by demonstrating how a character changes because of one profound event. This is true in T. Coraghessan Boyle’s “Greasy Lake,” in which the main character sees the irresponsibility of his lifestyle after a particularly bad night down at Greasy Lake. One year ago, after a bad night in my own life, I too saw how my lifestyle could easily backfire. The main character of “Greasy Lake” and myself experienced similar events of enlightenment that changed our attitudes from an invincible, consequence-free mindset, to a more mature, responsible one. Like most teenagers, I knew what “could” happen if I got caught drinking, smoking, or sneaking out past curfew. The rules had been made clear many times before by parents, teachers, etc., but they never truly registered. The boys from “Greasy Lake” “wore torn-up leather jackets, slouched around with toothpicks in [their] mouths,
