POS-301: Principles and Articles of the United States Constitution Worksheet Part I: Principles of the Constitution . Self-Government : Self Government is a government under direction as well as control of its own people rather than an outside country. The significance of self-government in shaping American government is the ability to do as they please if they follow the procedures and guidelines of the government. In 1620 the Mayflower compact was signed and created to allow for self-government to eventually happen in America. Although not all governments were self-governed these pilgrims paved the path to self- government and changed the face of history. (Click, 2020) Separation of Powers : Separation of Powers is when a states government is divided into different branches and given different powers and responsibilities. These branches include the legislative branch, the judicial branch, and executive branch. The significance of separation of powers in shaping American government is giving each branch a responsibility to make the government function correctly. The separation of powers helps with limiting the number of conflicts by equaling out the power to each branch and giving them their own responsibilities so that one branch is not overruled by the other instead they work together to form one outcome. (Kenton, 2020) Checks and Balances : Checks and balances is a law set in place to ensure that one branch does not gain too much power of the other. This is done by allowing each branch to vote on and essentially determine the limit of power each branch is receiving. This would also be the significance of checks and balances in shaping American government. This makes the system fair and gives the three branches to do their jobs without running into conflict. Each branch is responsible for their own duties and this act ensures that each branch have an equal power which helps when making decisions and working together for a greater outcome.
