Dealing with Diversity
The overrepresentation of students from culturally and linguistically different
backgrounds in special education programs is an issue that needs more attention than ever.
However, overrepresentation is not the only issue. I have seen students suffer from
underrepresentation due to school psychologists, teachers, or resources teachers lacking in
their position to properly represent the student. This causes students to drop through the
cracks and pushed through school. Drop-out rates are climbing as this also contributes to
those rates.
Misrepresentation is another issue that carries several reasons such as lack of culturally
diverse educators, standardized testing and insufficient supply of tests for those who are not
