The Motivation of Hunger and Eating: Biological Factors - Brain Regulation o Dual-Centers Model Off switch – ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) Lesioning leads to excessive eating and weight gain On switch – lateral hypothalamus (LH) Lesioning leads to a reduction in eating (no desire to eat) o Another hypothalamic nucleus: Paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus (PVN) , release of neuropeptide Y The Motivation of Hunger and Eating: Biological Factors - Glucose and digestive regulation o Glucostatic theory Glucostats in liver monitor glucose levels, signal hypothalamus to regulate hunger Once your liver detects the glucose, you no longer have the desire to eat as much Satiety signal? (signal that you are full) o Stomach Vagus nerve sends ascending signals about stomach stretching Stomach stretching causes neural signals which shut off the desire to eat more Satiety signal? (signal you’re full) - Hormonal regulation o Insulin: important hormone in diabetes (diabetics lack insulin)… this lack of insulin creates a situation where the ability to extract glucose from the blood is eliminated.
