Abigail Alon 5/2/11 Biology 9 th Concept Check 14.1 1) The way that he work of Lyell and Malthus influence Darwin as he developed his theory of evolution is that The work of Lyell and Malthus influenced Darwin as he developed his theory of evolution because Darwin read and learned much from Lyell’s and Malthus’ work, such as Darwin learned that geologic processes such as erosion could explain the physical features of the earth. 2) The characteristics of the Galapagos Islands that were particularly important for Darwin were that: A) The islands had many unique organisms. Most of the species on the island were similar to, but different from the plants and animals of the nearest mainland. B) He observed that even the individual islands in the chain had some different species of plants and animals from one another. 3) Natural selection is the process by which individuals with inherited characteristics well-suited to the environment leave more offspring on average than other individuals do. 4) Sharp teeth on a house cat is an adaptation because sharp teeth is an inherited characteristic that improves the cat’s ability to survive while the scar on a cats ear was not inherited and probably happened to the cat during its lifetime. Concept Check 14.2 1) Older fossils are generally in deeper rock fossils than younger fossils because is because over time new rock layers are added containing fossils from each time period.
