ESS Chapter 12: The Atmosphere: Weather and Climate Weather : the state of the atmosphere at a given time and place Five variables to determine the state of the atmosphere: 1) Temperature 2) Air Pressure 3) Humidity 4) Cloudiness 5) Wind Speed and Direction Climate : The average “weather” condition of a place. Ex) the Sahara deserts climate is very hot and dry, but still has some days in which the region experiences cold/wet weather. - The Sun’s heat and the earth’s rotation are the 2 things that energize the atmosphere. Composition of the atmosphere - An atmosphere is the gaseous envelope that surrounds a planet or any other celestial body. - Air is the invisible, odorless mixture of gases and suspended particles that surrounds one special planet, the earth. - The composition of air is stated in terms of relativity than absolute amounts. - Varies place to place on the earth. - Aerosols- tiny liquid droplets or tiny solid particles that are so small that they remain suspended in the air. Can be in multiple forms.
