A complaint against professor Gates that there wasn’t historical context for the AST and his commentary in the film 3. Criticism that Gates’ personal sense of victimhood colored his view of Africans He was in search of an apology from or finding Africans to blame for his ancestors’ journey across the Atlantic 4. His relationship and commentary with Africans points to tension between AA’s and Africans 5. The representation of Africa was still problematic 6. Can a scholar, no matter how distinguished, of AA studies, speak authoritatively on Africa? What gives him/her the right to do so, are they qualified to speak on Africa?
