September 18, 2012 The Transformation Thesis: The Atlantic Slave Trade and the Kingdom of Kongo -the impact of the AST on African societies John Thornton: the AST, as massive as it was, didn’t have a fundamentally altering effect on African societies engaged in the trade Slavery already existed in African societies before they became engaged in the AST Rulers were able to control and alter the traffic so it didn’t alter the societies Highlights the dynamism Africans had over their own destinies Paul Lovejoy: Transformation Thesis: slavery may have existed in African societies before the AST but the engagement in the AST had a byproduct of increasing slavery in those societies; created an increase in slavery within those African societies The transformation within African societies was deeply negative for those African societies Corroded the ruling and state institutions Created an institution where slavery became indebted and destructive To determine the validity of the ideas: Where are we talking about and what was the time period? Then determine which of the theories fit the society in question best for that specific time period

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
