Midterm Review Questions 1. Compare and contrast the different definitions of politics presented in class. Additionally, discuss in what ways they are useful and what are their shortcomings . 1. The Practical Definition of Politics: Refers to the practice of the art or the science of administering states or other political units. 2. The Feminist Definition of Politics: Politics is where there is no distinctions between public and private spheres. 3. The Laswell Definition of Politics: Politics is the process of who gets what, when and how in a society, in terms of the distribution and allocations of scarce resources. 4. The Easton Definition of Politics: Opposing Laswell : Politics is not about who, what, when, et cetera, but Politics is the authoritative allocation of values and value systems in place in society. Values are intangible, and broadens the definition of politics in society. a. Politics is a loop: Demands → Supports → Output → Feedback. 5. The Crick Definition of Politics: Politics is the actions which occur only at the level of government and the state and must involve some level of intra-party competition. It is limited in time and space to relatively liberal pluralistic societies with liberal debate. 6. The Riker Definition of Politics: Politics is the art of manipulation, predicated upon three assumptions: a. Rationality; people make reasoned decisions. b. Component Analysis; looking at politics, one only needs to understand small parts of the system to predict human behavior. c. Strategic Behavior; before you act, you think about what others may do. i. Individuals use rhetoric in the art of politics/manipulation. ii.
