November 14, 2012 Jewish Association: club charging $15,000 for membership and expected at least that same amount in contribution to charity-exclusive club Members thought it was a good thing to make charitable contribution and were willing to enforce the policy Had a piece of collective social capital: were prepared to condition other private benefits on it Firms will invest in firm-specific capital to employees/apprentices; companies put a lot of effort into training their apprentices (in Germany-spend half day in school, half at job) Shirley Williams: went to Germany to figure out their system, witnessed a confrontation If firms don’t apprentice, their manager gets confronted/socially embarrassed Training the workers for the entire field, not just their certain firm In order to get people to contribute to a public good there needs to be a private good tied to it, can’t get the private good unless you may contribution to the public good Approbation, social or economic, could be an incentivized private good Collective efficacy, collective social capital : all mechanisms for producing behavior that’s consistent to the behavior of the group that would otherwise be disadvantageous for the individual (depriving of something wanted or giving something unwanted) : substitute for public action, don’t need a law to enforce policies, community had own
