Jonathan Boice 1 Jonathan Boice Dr. Dibello Intro to Literature 29 November 2006 The Chair and The Life It Represents In the short story “The Chair Carrier”, written by Yusuf Idris, the chair represents a way of being or life itself. The Chair Carrier says “I’m carrying it because that’s the way I earn my living” (610). The narrator in the story acts as an obstruction. He tries to pull the Carrier down. In the following paragraphs there is going to be evidence supporting these ideas. Both the reader and the narrator can notice right from the beginning that it is very odd for this man to be carrying a chair. Especially when he is standing in the middle of Cairo. It was quite odd for a man with just a flap in front of him to be holding this chair. The narrator asks him why he is carrying this chair and he replies "It's what I'm carrying" (609). And he also says that he has been carrying it for over a thousand years which is also strange. This chair represents more than a chair
