CHCDIV001_ACTAC – Work with diverse people Summative assessment 1 Question 1 The concepts of cultural awareness, cultural safety and cultural competence are important in the context of a diverse workplace. Explain what these concepts are and how they impact on the different work roles across the community services sector. (350-380 words) The concept of cultural awareness is the understanding of one's understanding of the differences of other peoples and their own from different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, values and attitudes in a positive and open-minded manner. Cultural awareness can be broken down into four stages, which are: Stage one: People are all the same. Stage two: Cultural differences exist, but my culture is the best. Stage three: Other cultures are of value and I can learn from them. Stage four: More than one cultural frame of reference exists. Each person will see cultures differently but depending on one's cultural awareness and their willingness to better understand, learn and accept different cultures. With the second stage, a person is less likely to identify or resolve cultural conflicts due to close-mindedness or a lack of understanding or experiences with different cultures and lack cultural awareness. Where people who fall into the latter two stages are more likely to identify or resolve cultural conflicts and learn from other cultures. When workers have or are willing to develop cultural awareness, they are able to improve or create more trusting relationships and interactions towards other workers and clients. It has also shown an improvement in communications. Cultural safety within the workplace is where the environment promotes the spiritually, social and emotionally safety of all workers. This involves the concept of upholding the action of ensuring no assault, denial or challenge of a person's identity, and their needs. When a workplace upholds correct cultural safety practices, all people are respected on the same level and able to share meaning, knowledge, experiences and learning in an openly and supportively manner. This gives all workers a right to a voice and their ideas that will help better the workplaces, other workers and their clients. Promoting and upholding cultural competence within the workplace can be tied in with cultural safety and cultural awareness practices. When cultural safety and

cultural awareness practices are met, employees are able to work effectively for or with people from a wide range of different cultures and help supports the accommodation of the preferences and needs of these people. Question 2 Explain diversity and what respect for diversity in the workplace means. (100 words) Diversity explains that the everyone is difference, its everything we are and what we are not. Diversity speaks about all the differences that make us, us. Those differences are made up of many different aspects that makes us unique such as, but not limited to: - Race.
