Unformatted text preview: Anthropology Notes 8/28/07 • Precognition: Knowing, predicting something before it happens perceiving something in someway before it happens. • Telepathy: communicating at large distances without any physical needs. 8/30/07 Film: Religions of the world • Shaman: Signifies a kind of prophet, strains to become a spiritual leader, hunter- gathering society, healers who use spiritual methods to cure those who are ailing, conduct ceremonies • The sun is a god, and the moon is regarded as the sun’s wife • The fire god animates fire, bear god animates bears, and so on • High god lives in heavenly realm • The Shaman’s costume is to show how they are spiritually connected and they are viewed as the temple • Many other cultures have “ancestor worship” • Sacrifice of animals is associated with eating, fire is almost always used in the sacrifice, to their essence is sent up to the divine realm • Sacrifices are to please the gods so things like rain, sun, good crops will happen • Human sacrifice was widespread in Central America, mostly by the Aztecs, they thought the person that was sacrificed could be a god to be • Omens are sights or sounds believed to indicate something about the future • There are believed to be two kinds of magic, black magic and white magic. Black magic has evil intent, white is for healing and helping. • Wicca- earth based religion, people who honor the earth • The dolls that are known as “voodoo dolls” can also be used to help or heal someone, not just used for the negative things as perceived • In small societies wrong behavior is that which would endanger the group • Superstition- Latin for stand over or beyond • Totemism- Identifies a clan as a species, marry outside of each clan, a clan is connected to a specific animal • A person is believed to die in the old life before he or she is resurrected in the new world • Believe that funeral ceremonies ensure a safe passing into the afterlife • Mythic time is like chronological time, or an alternate timeline • Gods work in hyper time or hyperspace • Animism- the belief that gods are in trees and animals, if you kill a deer you must do so with respect if your culture believes gods to inhabit deer • Shamans- comes from Siberia, ritual spet • Divination- the act of divining something, finding something about the supernatural world by manipulating or observing something in the natural world, can tell something about the future • Augury- specific omens (like if a black cat crosses your path, it’s bad luck) • Clan- kinship group, related by blood through descent 9/4/07 • 115 different dialects in California before Europeans came and brought their culture • Fissioning- at somewhere around 50 people • 50-150 people live at face-to-face contact with each other • Western culture- comes from Western Europe, includes US, Canada, Australia, etc....
