Handout No. 3 : More Miscellaneous Names, Terms, etc. • Savonarola (Girolamo Savonarola): Dominican friar, preacher, and “martyr” from Ferrara, who arrived in Florence in 1490, resided at the Convent of San Marco, and became prior there in 1491. He was the unofficial leader of the new republican government after the death of Lorenzo de’ Medici in 1492 and the expulsion of Lorenzo’s son Piero in 1494. Savonarola instituted the infamous Bonfires of Vanities in 1497, was excommunicated by Pope Alexander VI (Borgia) in the same year, and was hanged and burned at the stake in 1498. His followers were known as piagnoni (“great weepers” or “cry-babies”). • Apocalypse : Last book of the New Testament, written by St. John the Evangelist (“the Divine”). Also known as the Book of Revelation, it deals with dire and joyful predictions, “revealed” to St. John in a vision, of events surrounding the end of the world. • Inscription on Botticelli’s Mystic Nativity (approx. translation from the original Greek): “This picture I, Alessandro, painted at the end of the year 1500, during the trouble in Italy in the
