October 30, 2007 Reconstruction -period from 1865- 1877 -just after civil war -former confederate states are reorganized by the union  -South is under Union control enforced by soldiers -April 14, 1865- day Lincoln is killed which changes  reconstruction plans because Lincoln didn’t want to punish the  south -Andrew Johnson was Lincolns vise president   -17 th  president 1865-1869  -U.S. senator from TN only southern congressmen to     remain  loyal to the union   -Slave owner even during the war until 1862   -hated southern aristocracy shunned by rich white     southerners felt that they caused war -His main goal it to punish the rich upper class in the south he  was sympathetic to white supremacy -pardons all confederates except for most high ranking in  military and states most from southern aristocracy -Black codes -ban on gun ownership -MS made insulting gestures and language criminal  -Barred from jury duty -refused the right to vote
