2 Sociological Theory and Trends Comparing and contrasting functionalism and conflict theory is that the functionalism states that each aspect of a society that serves a function and are necessary for the survival of that society while the conflict theory states that a society is in perpetual class conflict due to the limitation and the unequal distribution of resources. Functionalism seeks to explain social institutions from the perspective of its functions while structural functionalism sees society as a functional interplay of different components forming an overall structure. Sexism is the subordination of one sex, usually female, based on the assumed superiority of the other sex (Kendall,2018). Symbolic interactionist believe that girls and boys learn ways of behaving through our families, parents, teachers and peers.
