Melissa Wilkerson February 20, 2008 Writing assignment 2 Who, What, When, Where, and Why: The United States at War 1917-1918 War happens because of conflict and plights between countries. The First World War started in 1914 because of this. Europe had become a war zone. However, The U.S. wanted to stay neutral in western affairs. But, The U.S. could not stay out of the struggle and went to war in April of 1917 against Germany. This caused Austria-Hungary and Turkey to split ties with the U.S. By December of 1917 the U.S would declare war on Austria-Hungary also. This act changed several things for not only the U.S. but other countries as well. The U.S. began helping Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan and Italy; the Allies. However, the U.S. did not want to be known as an “ally” when they entered the war in 1917. Instead, The United States started the War industries board in July of 1917 in order send raw materials and soldiers to the Allied powers so that the U.S. could help.
