This preview shows page 1 - 2 out of 3 pages.

Somatosensation o Somatosensory system has three distinct and interacting systems Proprioceptive: body position Interoceptive: body conditions (eg. Temp and blood pressure) Exteroreceptive: external stimuli Proprioceptive and interoceptive somatosensations o Proprioception is mediated by mechanoreceptors Muscle spindles: receptors located in the musce Sense stretch and send feedback to the brain Golgi tendon organ: located in the tendon, senses effort exerted by muscles o Interoceptive: peripheral viscera have receptors too Exteroreceptive system o Touch (mechanical stimuli) o Temperature (thermal stimuli) Skin temperature is mediated by warmth and cold receptors—both static and dynamic Pain (nociceptive stimuli) Exteroreceptive somatosensory receptors o Attached to the hair cells on your skin o When a hair cell moves, it causes these receptors to start releasing neurotransmitters o Meissner’s corpuscle Small receptive field Fast adapting Sense vibration Touch o Merkel’s Disk Small receptive field Slow adapting (texture/fine detail) Touch Respond to gradual skin indication

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
