Oldest Profession or Newest Prohibition? Prostitution is known as the oldest profession. Women have been selling their bodies for as far back as time can be recorded, dating back even to the time of Byzantine and Egyptian Empires (Liberator). It even dates back to the days of the Code of Hammurabi (Head). Many would say that women will always sell their bodies. If prostitution has always been around then it always will be and there is no way to change that. Although prostitution has been around for ages, this is a logical fallacy of begging the question. However, many more people in the United States do not approve of prostitution and would not vote to have it legalized. There are many different laws concerning prostitution. The oldest laws prohibiting this profession date all the way back to AD 590. Under the rule of Recarred I, Visigoth King of Spain, there was a ban placed on prostitution (Head). This was done to help bring his country together under the Christian faith. Centuries later in medieval England, prostitution was still frowned upon and widely discouraged but not illegalized. 200 years later the Great Council of Venice stated that prostitution was “absolutely indispensable to the world” and the government set aside funds for brothels in major Italian cities over the next 2 centuries (Head). After the French Revolution, bans against prostitution were replaced starting in Paris and spreading throughout the country. In the 1950’s India banned sex trafficking; South Africa did the same decades later in 2007 (Head). All throughout history, governments had switched back and forth over this decision, never clearly drawing a line as to what should or should not be legal. In the US, President Obama is cracking down on prostitution. Part of Obama’s stimulus package plan was to create jobs; his hope is that by funding new infrastructure in major cities, new jobs will be created and this will help take people, like prostitutes, off of the streets and put them in legitimate places of work (Preston).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
