Argument Identification Identify the speech acts in following passages: argument, assertion, description, explanation, or none of the above. © Kevin Possin 1. Because there is considerable disagreement over values, we might first be inclined to treat them as merely matters of personal preference or individual taste and hence not as the sort of things about which we can think critically. Explanation Such a subjective approach, however, need not be taken. That position is often the result of a hasty generalization based on the observation that some values are indeed subjective, e.g., some people like stripes, others like prints; some like rock music, others like classical or jazz. But it does not follow that because values in some areas are matters of personal taste, they are subjective in all areas, any more than it would follow that because some dogs have long hair that all dogs do. Argument (Hatcher & Spencer, Reasoning and Writing ) 2. Background: Imagine the following passage read before studying Critical Thinking : Often the same statement can serve equally well as either an explanation or an argument. But one thing that could never be the case is that a statement serve as both an argument and a mere assertion. - Assertion (We have no reason to believe this yet.) 3. Background: Imagine the following passage read after studying Critical Thinking : Often the same statement can serve equally well as either an explanation or an argument. But one thing that could never be the case is that a statement serve as both an argument and a mere assertion. - Description (The fact that we already learned this means that we don’t need an explanation/premise/reason to believe this because we already know this.) 4. Wiring and plumbing a newly constructed home is seldom problematic, (Premise) since all the studs and ceiling joists are exposed and accessible. Explanation/Argument Which is why the time to put in every outlet and faucet you could ever imagine using is at the time of construction, even if it adds a bit of up-front cost to your home. Dick’s Utilities is the one to call for all your electrical and plumbing needs . Dick’s has three locations: Winona, La Crosse, and Cabbageville. Description 5. Jane’s the best doubles player, because she moves without the ball well. Argument (“because” is a good premise indicator; “she moves without the ball well” is the reason why she is the best doubles player). Her coach not only taught her the fundamentals of tennis but also the strategies of doubles. Explanation (why she moves well without the ball). Bill, is good at only singles. Assertion He hasn’t a clue about where to be on the court in doubles. His coach obviously never did any drills for doubles play. Explanation - The last sentences explain the assertion about Bill and turns those three sentences into an argument.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
