ANT 302 Mid-Term Study Guide Culture – cultivation, tending, or nurturing of something (verb); continually changing set of ideas and symbols that inform our behavior and allow us to interpret behavior of others and world around us (changing, not evolving) Six attributes of culture – learned, shared, symbolic, naturalized, integrated, all- encompassing o learned: children go through process of enculturation not genetic, natural or inherent (biologically) both conscious and unconscious learned through observation and emulation also through being told or disciplined o symbolic: humans have ability to establish arbitrary relations between signs and what they refer to words are symbols; not just language but objects and practices o naturalized: culturally-determined way of doing things is natural, inevitable and necessary, even invisible second nature: strange to do things any other way culture is of the realm of tradition; epistemology: way of knowing and organizing in mind culture of individualism “marked” and “unmarked” as mainstream o Integrated: dimensions of life are linked together change in one will bring change in others patterns found across different facets of life

Cultural relativism – position where a practice is only judged within its cultural context but does not mean amorality; strongly characterizes anthropology in North America Ethnocentrism – only one right way of doing things, your culture’s way Relativistic fallacy – value judgments should only come after understanding Ethnocentric fallacy – mistaken notion that the beliefs and behaviors of other cultures can be judged from the perspective of one’s own culture Enculturation – process where established culture teaches the accepted norms and values of culture Naturalization – innate and unchanging Ethnography – form of research, writing and sometimes filmmaking (associated with field work) Studying up – studying of people of a higher status Participant observation – studying culture requiring interaction and participation in lives of subjects; anthropologists can be insiders and practitioners (their own culture) Unstructured/structured interviews – o unstructured: some set questions, but inserted in conversation with people an guided by discussion; hard to compare o structured: set format with same questions and same answers; answers may raise interesting points that may cause you to go off track Anthropological ethics – Reflexivity – E.E. Evans-Pritchard (1902 – 1973) – o founding figure in British social anthropology who began work in Sudan in 1930 (1899 – 1955 region part of Anglo-Egypt Sudan(Great Britain)) o resisted encroachment on sovereignty o his research was funded and guided by British colonial office Clifford Geertz – founded new form of ethnographic writing: thick description Culture Change –
