Informal Report To: UMBC Student Government Association From: Your Name Date: March 4, 2013 Subject: UMBC Smoking Policy Smoking policies have been implemented all around the world. There are many places that have banned smoking in its entirety. Maryland is one state that has regulations on indoor smoking. A lot of colleges have smoking policies that prohibit smoking within a certain amount of feet of building entrances, such as here at UMBC, while others have completely banned smoking on their campuses. Though campuses have smoking policies, just like all other policies, some people don’t comply with the policies. Even though we have designated smoking areas at UMBC, and a policy that states, “Smoking is prohibited within 20 feet of all building openings including walkways, doorways, air or ventilation intake systems, entryways, and windows. Smoking is also prohibited on UMBC’s mainstreet area…”, everyday you’re sure to see people smoking as soon as you exit a building or walking down mainstreet (“UMBC Smoking Policy”). Because of people who don’t follow the policies, and a university who doesn’t seem to enforce these policies, I believe something should be done to be fair to those who do comply with the campus’ rules. Proposed Solutions UMBC should either enforce the policy, increase the policy to a smoke-free policy, or take the policy away altogether. These solutions are all looked at based upon convenience, price, and effectiveness.

Enforce the Policy – As a UMBC student, I see people smoking in non-designated areas everyday; but what I don’t see are the repercussions of their actions. We have a smoking policy, and there are consequences for not complying with the policies, but who is there to enforce the policies?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
