Caitlin Duncan September, 2007 CP essay 1 – Northrupp Over the years, many things inevitably go through some sort of change. Literature is one of those things that indisputably changes as the world and its cultures do. Greek mythology has changed and almost ceased to exist in today’s literary writings, and many of the famous stories and epics about Greek mythology would be much different if they had been written a couple hundred years later by different authors. There would be no talk of the gods, and no epic heroes that had extraordinary powers that came from those gods and other powers from within the earth. The heroes from the epic of Gilgamesh, the Iliad, and Antigone would all be very different in many ways if they had been written within the era of Christianity, which has lasted from the birth of Jesus until the present. The great hero Gilgamesh in the epic story named after him has many qualities that would and many qualities that would not be changed if his story had been written by a Christian author. Gilgamesh’s character is one who is loved because of his beauty and strength, and uses his authority as King of Uruk to do as he pleases. The most emphasized privilege that he takes advantage of is him sleeping with every woman the night before she is to be married. The grooms of Uruk hate him for this, but there is nothing that they can do because Gilgamesh has authority over all of them. Another trait that Gilgamesh has that would be different is his attachment to Enkidu, and also to worldly pleasures. Once he and Enkidu become friends, they
